Major Minerals – Iodine

Iodine is an essential trace element for the human body, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. Iodine deficiency can lead to a condition known as iodine deficiency disorder (IDD), which can result in an enlarged thyroid gland (known as a goitre), hypothyroidism, intellectual disabilities, and other health issues.

On the other hand, excessive iodine intake can also have adverse effects on thyroid function and should be avoided. Iodine is not produced by the body, so it must be obtained through the diet. Common dietary sources of iodine include iodised salt (salt fortified with iodine), seafood (particularly fish and seaweed), dairy products, and eggs.

Some benefits include:

Thyroid Hormone Production: Iodine is an integral component of thyroid hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) & triiodothyronine (T3).

Metabolism: Thyroid hormones, which contain iodine, play a significant role in regulating the body’s metabolic rate.

Immune System Function: Iodine has been shown to have a role in supporting the immune system’s defence.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Iodine has antiinflammatory properties and may help reduce inflammation in various parts of the body.
